Ancient Rishis of India – Great Founders

ACHARYA KANAD (600 BCE)

FOUNDER OF ATOMIC THEORY

As the founder of ” Vaisheshik Darshan “- one of six principal philosophies of India – Acharya Kanad was a genius in philosophy. He is believed to have been born in Prabhas Kshetra near Dwarika in Gujarat . He was the pioneer expounder of realism, law of causation and the atomic theory.

He has classified all the objects of creation into nine elements, namely: earth, water, light, wind, ether, time, space, mind and soul. He says, “Every object of creation is made of atoms which in turn connect with each other to form molecules.” His statement ushered in the Atomic Theory for the first time ever in the world, nearly 2500 years before John Dalton . Kanad has also described the dimension and motion of atoms and their chemical reactions with each other. The eminent historian, T.N. Colebrook , has said, “Compared to the scientists of Europe , Kanad and other Indian scientists were the global masters of this field.”

ARYABHATT (476 CE)

MASTER ASTRONOMER AND MATHEMATICIAN

Born in 476 CE in Kusumpur ( Bihar ), Aryabhatt’s intellectual brilliance remapped the boundaries of mathematics and astronomy. In 499 CE, at the age of 23, he wrote a text on astronomy and an unparallel treatise on mathematics called “Aryabhatiyam.” He formulated the process of calculating the motion of planets and the time of eclipses. Aryabhatt was the first to proclaim that the earth is round, it rotates on its axis, orbits the sun and is suspended in space – 1000 years before Copernicus published his heliocentric theory.

He is also acknowledged for calculating p (Pi) to four decimal places: 3.1416 and the sine table in trigonometry. Centuries later, in 825 CE, the Arab mathematician, Mohammed Ibna Musa credited the value of Pi to the Indians, “This value has been given by the Hindus.” And above all, his most spectacular contribution was the concept of zero without which modern computer technology would have been non-existent. Aryabhatt was a colossus in the field of mathematics.

BHASKARACHARYA II (1114-1183 CE)

GENIUS IN ALGEBRA

Born in the obscure village of Vijjadit (Jalgaon) in Maharastra, Bhaskaracharya’s work in Algebra, Arithmetic and Geometry catapulted him to fame and immortality. His renowned mathematical works called “Lilavati” and “Bijaganita” are considered to be unparalleled and a memorial to his profound intelligence. Its translation in several languages of the world bear testimony to its eminence. In his treatise ” Siddhant Shiromani ” he writes on planetary positions, eclipses, cosmography, mathematical techniques and astronomical equipment.

In the ” Surya Siddhant ” he makes a note on the force of gravity: “Objects fall on earth due to a force of attraction by the earth. Therefore, the earth, planets, constellations, moon, and sun are held in orbit due to this attraction.” Bhaskaracharya was the first to discover gravity, 500 years before Sir Isaac Newton . He was the champion among mathematicians of ancient and medieval India . His works fired the imagination of Persian and European scholars, who through research on his works earned fame and popularity.

NAGARJUNA (100 CE)

WIZARD OF CHEMICAL SCIENCE
He was an extraordinary wizard of science born in the nondescript village of Baluka in Madhya Pradesh . His dedicated research for twelve years produced maiden discoveries and inventions in the faculties of chemistry and metallurgy. Textual masterpieces like ” Ras Ratnakar ,” “Rashrudaya” and “Rasendramangal” are his renowned contributions to the science of chemistry. Where the medieval alchemists of England failed, Nagarjuna had discovered the alchemy of transmuting base metals into gold. As the author of medical books like “Arogyamanjari” and “Yogasar,” he also made significant contributions to the field of curative medicine. Because of his profound scholarliness and versatile knowledge, he was appointed as Chancellor of the famous University of Nalanda . Nagarjuna’s milestone discoveries impress and astonish the scientists of today.

ACHARYA CHARAKA
(600 BCE)

FATHER OF MEDICINE
Acharya Charak has been crowned as the Father of Medicine. His renowned work, the ” Charak Samhita “, is considered as an encyclopedia of Ayurveda. His principles, diagoneses, and cures retain their potency and truth even after a couple of millennia. When the science of anatomy was confused with different theories in Europe , Acharya Charak revealed through his innate genius and enquiries the facts on human anatomy, embryology, pharmacology, blood circulation and diseases like diabetes, tuberculosis, heart disease, etc. In the ” Charak Samhita ” he has described the medicinal qualities and functions of 100,000 herbal plants. He has emphasized the influence of diet and activity on mind and body. He has proved the correlation of spirituality and physical health contributed greatly to diagnostic and curative sciences. He has also prescribed an ethical charter for medical practitioners two centuries prior to the Hippocratic oath. Through his genius and intuition, Acharya Charak made landmark contributions to Ayurveda. He forever remains etched in the annals of history as one of the greatest and noblest of rishi-scientists.

ACHARYA SUSHRUTHA (600 BCE)

FATHER OF PLASTIC SURGERY
A genius who has been glowingly recognized in the annals of medical science. Born to sage Vishwamitra, Acharya Sudhrut details the first ever surgery procedures in ” Sushrut Samhita ,” a unique encyclopedia of surgery. He is venerated as the father of plastic surgery and the science of anesthesia. When surgery was in its infancy in Europe , Sushrut was performing Rhinoplasty (restoration of a damaged nose) and other challenging operations. In the ” Sushrut Samhita ,” he prescribes treatment for twelve types of fractures and six types of dislocations. His details on human embryology are simply amazing. Sushrut used 125 types of surgical instruments including scalpels, lancets, needles, Cathers and rectal speculums; mostly designed from the jaws of animals and birds. He has also described a number of stitching methods; the use of horse’s hair as thread and fibers of bark. In the ” Sushrut Samhita ,” he details 300 types of operations. The ancient Indians were the pioneers in amputation, caesarian and cranial surgeries. Acharya Sushrut was a giant in the arena of medical science.

VARAHAMIHIRA (499-587 CE)

EMINENT ASTROLOGER AND ASTRONOMER
renowned astrologer and astronomer who was honored with a special decoration and status as one of the nine gems in the court of King Vikramaditya in Avanti ( Ujjain ). Varahamihir’ s book “panchsiddhant” holds a prominent place in the realm of astronomy. He notes that the moon and planets are lustrous not because of their own light but due to sunlight. In the ” Bruhad Samhita ” and ” Bruhad Jatak ,” he has revealed his discoveries in the domains of geography, constellation, science, botany and animal science. In his treatise on botanical science, Varamihir presents cures for various diseases afflicting plants and trees. The rishi-scientist survives through his unique contributions to the science of astrology and astronomy.

ACHARYA PATANJALI (200 BCE)

FATHER OF YOGA
The Science of Yoga is one of several unique contributions of India to the world. It seeks to discover and realize the ultimate Reality through yogic practices. Acharya Patanjali , the founder, hailed from the district of Gonda (Ganara) in Uttar Pradesh . He prescribed the control of prana (life breath) as the means to control the body, mind and soul. This subsequently rewards one with good health and inner happiness. Acharya Patanjali ‘s 84 yogic postures effectively enhance the efficiency of the respiratory, circulatory, nervous, digestive and endocrine systems and many other organs of the body. Yoga has eight limbs where Acharya Patanjali shows the attainment of the ultimate bliss of God in samadhi through the disciplines of: yam, niyam, asan, pranayam, pratyahar, dhyan and dharna. The Science of Yoga has gained popularity because of its scientific approach and benefits. Yoga also holds the honored place as one of six philosophies in the Indian philosophical system. An afternoon with Pankaj ji :)

Note : could pen down whatever i could recall.. if any mistakes please do forgive and guide šŸ™‚

Sri Pankaj ji šŸ™‚

Excerpts from an afternoon with Pankajji šŸ™‚

Navratri is approaching šŸ™‚
Did you know first 3 days of Navratri are of Tamas – to remove the tamas.
Next three : Rajo gun- To remove the rajsik element..
and the last three : sattva : to enhance the sattva!

Thats why we do advance in Tamasic days, so that we will get strength to remove the rajsik element in us šŸ™‚

Lets go back to the history of Navratri in Ashram..
There was a time, when Ashram was so not well constructed and not so well connected to city..

So Navratri pujas used to be conducted there..
a very interesting thing.. you know simply sanskrit chantings is not enough..
it needs to be said in a particular tone, particular pronounciation..
then it has a very good effect on the mind body and soul šŸ™‚

So even though the Pujas used to be conducted,Guruji felt that our pandits could not chant the way it could be precisely;
Guruji then found out certain Pandit Sundarmurtiji..
HE had heard Sundarmurtiji and found that his chantings were perfect ones that are required šŸ™‚

So HE invited Sundarmurtiji to conduct the Puja.. šŸ™‚
It happened in the Old Meditation Hall with a small barricade, ahead of the kalash..
Now the kalash initially is light but over the days of Navratri it gets heavy with all chantings and the sattva šŸ™‚
On the Ashtami day, its taken from its place and parikrama is made twice around the place of Kalash..
Its said that if that water falls down then Pralay may happen all over!
so what’s the best place : the water is poured on Guruji after Parikrama šŸ™‚
and then its showered on all!

At that time, there were around 300+ people in the Puja.. šŸ™‚
But as years went by, numbers increased and so With time, the Navratri Puja shifted from Old Meditation Hall, and gradually to VM and
now at Yagyashala!

Sundarmurtiji then said, that he will conduct the Navratri Puja in Ashram only.. šŸ™‚

since then, of the whole of India, he performs this puja in Banglore Ashram only.

With time, there was a need to revive the Vedic knowledge.
At that time, only two teachers were there, one was 97 yr old and other was 70 yr old teacher who knew the Veda Agamas šŸ™‚

So the Ved Agama Pathshala was formed in 2001.

Starting from 20, its now rose to 450 Veda Boys šŸ™‚

With time, Guruji did find it would be difficult for people to come all the way the Bangalore and also there would be a problem in accomodating all šŸ™‚

So There were Rishis And Swamijis blessed to conduct Pujas, with the help of these Veda Boys šŸ™‚

Now its possible to have all that Mantra chantings as conducted in Ashram, right very close to you šŸ™‚

Q : when i am here it feels so nice, but as soon as i go out, its not possible to maintain that tranquility of mind? How do i do that?

A : You know same used to happen to me. When i used to leave Ashram before; there used to be such a heavy feeling in the heart.
I just did not want to leave. It used to be like; yaha achha lagta hai par waha achha nai lagta!
Then i became a teacher and i was surprised that i did not feel that heavy feeling while leaving the Ashram..
I wondered what was is it?
I found out that, there was no here and there šŸ™‚
Ab Main jaha jau, waha Ashram ko leke jata šŸ™‚
Ashram was where i am šŸ™‚ Its in the heart.. šŸ™‚
Now i no longer feel separated from the Ashram!

Mandir mane – Man ko dhairya dene wala.. šŸ™‚
isliye mandir jaate hai.. to give strength to the mind.

Jo khulega, woh khilega!
aur wo khilega, wo khulega šŸ™‚
Ek simple udarahan deta hu.
Kamal ka phool dekha hai?
Khichad main wo khilta hai..
wo aisa nai bolta, “niche kichad hai to main bhag jata hu, kichad se dur, aur dusri jagah khilta hu” šŸ™‚
Waise hi tumhe, dono bhi saath main karna hai; vyavasay-business and spirituality!
Khichad se, kamal ka phool, bandh hi upar ata hai..
Aur slowly slowly; wo khichad; kamal ke niche; ek parakh, ek layer banata hai!
par ab bhi wo nai khilta!
fir wo khichad ka layer; suraj ki roshni se jam jata hai šŸ™‚
Jab wo layer strong ho jata hai, tab usko protection milta hai šŸ™‚
Khichad ka layer bahar se strength deta hai aur uska trunk andar se khali aur khokla hota hai.
aur tab jakar wo khulta hai šŸ™‚
sahi samay par wo khulta hai šŸ™‚ kamal khichad ka sahara lete hue hosla rakhte hue..
usi kurupta ko apni shakti banata hai šŸ™‚
aur khulne ke baad fir wo khilta hai šŸ™‚

Aur abhi, is khile hue kamal ko sahara dene ke liye, khichad ki parakh bhi hai šŸ™‚

Ek aur cheez, dekho agar hamein kamal ka phool nikalna hai to hamein jhukna padta hai.. šŸ™‚

to khile hue ko nikalne ke liye, jhukna padta hai; aur nikalne ke baad.. uske sugandh ka anand, lene ke liye jhukna padta hai..

waise hi, khile hue admi ke saath hota hai šŸ™‚

..Chalo Aur batao,Laxmiji kis par baiththi hai? šŸ™‚

khile hue kamal ke upar šŸ™‚

waise hi, jab tum khuloge, yaane ke-jad nai hoge; aur khiloge, tab jakar, Laxmiji ka nivas tumhare aas pas hoga šŸ™‚

Tum khile hi nai ho, toh Laxmiji baithe kispe šŸ™‚

pehle khilo to sahi, fir Laxmiji aayegi šŸ™‚

Yeh advance course main kya hota hai..

Hamare jeevan main, karm se kuch daag lagte hai..

Daag ko dhone ka kaam, dhone wala karta hai. advance course karta hai šŸ™‚

Ab kitna daag hai, wo dhone wale ko pata, aur kitna mitana hai, wo bhi usko pata hai..

par kapda do to sahi.. advance course main jao to sahi.. šŸ™‚

aur agar kapda rigid ho jata hai, toh aur dhona padta hai.. aur advance courses.. šŸ™‚

toh apne aap ko, thoda khula rakhna, aur jadta chodke jana šŸ™‚

khuloge to khiloge šŸ™‚

Agar rigidity se bahar nikloge to blossom hoge.

tumhe to “ab” pe rehna chahiye .. par tum “kab” pe atke ho!

“kab” mera ye hoga, “kab” mera woh hoga!

arey “ab” main raho šŸ™‚

waise bhi sab milne ke baad kya hoga??

sab kuch mil gaya.. ab kya??

agar tab kuch nai ho raha, toh why not be in present moment now šŸ™‚

Eternity process wipes out the strong negative impressions from your life..

I remember i had laziness and i did the Eternity process and now its not there..

There was a reason, i used to be a plump milkman serving milk in front of a big Mahal.

and after selling the milk, i used to consume the remaining unsold milk šŸ˜€

haha šŸ™‚ the impression goes, but the incident may stay, as a funny incident in the memory šŸ™‚

The process goes over the seven lifetimes and whereever the impression is seen, its wiped out šŸ™‚

With laughter and smiles, the session ended šŸ™‚

followed by nice snacks made by Kaveetaji šŸ™‚

Mind was empty, stomach was full, heart was contented!

whats more required on a beautiful rainy sunday afternoon šŸ™‚

thank you kaveetaji and big thank you to Pankajji for a beautiful lovely eye opener session šŸ™‚

may more people experience your beautiful presence more often šŸ™‚

lots of love and pranaam Pankajji šŸ™‚

PS : A sincere advice: DONT Miss the Navratri celebrations!! Its the most blissful celebration .. šŸ™‚

A experience of silence, stillness and cleansing of the mind!

Chetna Jagrut ho jati hai!

Best time to offer your precious time to the Divine šŸ™‚
